Benefits in Belize,
with the context that matters.
Belize combines employer-paid leave, maternity protection, public holidays and qualifying termination benefits with contributory Social Security insurance for sickness, maternity, work injury, invalidity, retirement and survivors. Private medical cover and flexible schedules are also offered by some employers. Independent contractors have separate business, tax and self-employed insurance arrangements; employee entitlements depend on the actual working relationship.
This guide covers employees and independent contractors working in Belize. Statutory employment protections depend on the actual relationship and qualifying service; Social Security entitlements depend on paid contributions and insurable earnings. Public holiday calendars are national.

StatutoryCountrywideSurvivor pension and grant
+−
Survivor pension and grant
Social Security provides qualifying spouses, children and dependent parents with a survivor pension or one-time grant when an insured member dies from a non-work cause. Pension entitlement depends on the deceased member’s retirement or invalidity entitlement and contribution history; a pension requires 500 contributions and a grant at least 26 paid contributions. Child protection generally covers children under eighteen, extending to 21 in full-time education. Spouse and parent dependency, age and relationship conditions determine eligibility. Claims must be submitted within thirteen weeks of death.

StatutoryCountrywidePermanent incapacity benefit
+−
Permanent incapacity benefit
Social Security invalidity protection supports insured people under sixty who are medically assessed as permanently unable to do any work because of illness, following 26 consecutive weeks of sickness. Pension eligibility depends on paid contribution history, including at least 150 paid contributions since 1981 and either 250 paid contributions in the preceding five years or five paid contributions in the thirteen weeks before the illness that led to invalidity. The published pension formula uses 30% of the best-three-year insurable-earnings average, or 25% where fewer than 500 paid or credited contributions apply. A grant may be payable with at least 26 paid contributions when pension conditions are unmet. Claims must be submitted within thirteen weeks from the twenty-sixth illness week.

StatutoryCountrywideAccessing approved work-injury medical care
+−
Accessing approved work-injury medical care
Work-injury treatment begins with an approved general practitioner, who can refer to specialists. The worker or employer pays the first visit and can claim reimbursement if Social Security accepts the claim; subsequent diagnostics, medicines and specialist visits require Social Security purchase orders. Submit expenses within three months. Employers maintain an accident log, notify Social Security promptly, arrange transport to approved medical care and pay the initial visit if the employee cannot. If the claim is not accepted as work-related, the employee bears the medical bills.

StatutoryCountrywidePermanent work-injury disablement
+−
Permanent work-injury disablement
Permanent disability caused by work injury or a prescribed occupational disease is assessed by the Social Security Medical Board. A disability assessment of 25% or more qualifies for a pension; below 25%, a one-time grant is payable. The published weekly pension formula is 60% of average insurable earnings in the four weeks before injury multiplied by the disability percentage, with a BZD 47 weekly minimum. A person with total work-related disability who needs another person’s constant care may receive an additional allowance equal to 25% of the disablement pension. Submit the disablement or attendance claim within thirteen weeks of entitlement. The one-time grant is calculated as 260 multiplied by the average insurable earnings in the four weeks before injury and the assessed disability percentage.
StatutoryCountrywideWork-injury cash and medical protection
+−
Work-injury cash and medical protection
Insured work injury or prescribed occupational disease can qualify for Social Security cash benefit at 80% of the preceding four-week average insurable earnings for up to 156 days. Continuing treatment can lead to provisional disablement at 60% for up to another 91 days. Approved medical care is funded through government facilities or approved private providers; treatment abroad can be funded when necessary care is unavailable in Belize. Report the injury within 48 hours and submit the certified claim within fourteen working days. Employment-injury cover for self-employed participants is limited to the activity they registered.
StatutoryCountrywideRetirement pension and grant
+−
Retirement pension and grant
Insured people can claim a Social Security retirement pension at age 65 whether working or not, or at sixty–64 after employment ends. A pension normally requires 500 paid and credited contributions including 150 paid; a grant is available with at least 26 paid contributions when pension requirements are unmet. The starting pension is 30% of average insurable earnings from the best three contribution years; later service adds 2% annually for the next five years and 1% for the next twenty, up to 60%. The published minimum pension is BZD 47 weekly, paid on a four-week cycle. Claim within thirteen weeks of reaching 65 or, at sixty–64, ending employment.

StatutoryCountrywideSeverance and long-service gratuity
+−
Severance and long-service gratuity
Qualifying employees with five to ten years’ continuous service receive one week’s wages per complete service year on employer termination or retirement at age sixty or on medical grounds. For over ten years, specified qualifying termination, fixed-term expiry, justified departure and retirement cases attract two weeks per complete year; a resignation after at least ten years also qualifies for a gratuity. For employees exceeding ten years, service before 1 May 2011 is calculated at one week per year and service afterwards at two weeks. Casual work can count as continuous service when at least 180 days are worked in each relevant calendar year. For monthly or weekly paid staff, weekly wages equal the preceding twelve months’ basic wages divided by 52. For hourly or daily paid staff, the basis is the average basic weekly earnings paid within the relevant category at termination; for piecework, commission or profit-share staff, it is their preceding three-month average weekly earnings. Qualifying retirement-scheme arrangements can affect payment.

StatutoryCountrywidePaid annual holiday
+−
Paid annual holiday
Employees receive at least two working weeks of annual holiday after each qualifying year of employment. A qualifying year generally requires 250 days of actual work for weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly employees, or 150 days for other workers. Leave is taken in one period, or two by agreement, within six months of accrual unless the Labour Commissioner authorises postponement. The employer gives at least seven days’ notice of its start and pays statutory average holiday pay before leave begins. Public holidays and agreed rest days falling within the holiday extend it by a day each; they do not consume annual holiday. Statutory holiday pay uses the qualifying period’s basic remuneration, including the prescribed cash value of board and lodging, while excluding overtime, commissions and bonuses. These leave provisions exclude statutory outworkers, certain family members living with and working exclusively for the employer, and shop assistants governed by separate legislation.
StatutoryCountrywideEmployer-paid sick leave
+−
Employer-paid sick leave
An employee with at least 60 days’ service for the same employer in the preceding twelve months qualifies for up to sixteen working days of paid sick leave in twelve months when illness is not caused by their own default or misconduct. If the employer requests a medical certificate in writing, the employee must provide it within 48 hours. Where Social Security sickness benefit also applies, the employer pays the first three days’ basic wages and the difference between the benefit and basic pay for the next thirteen days. More favourable employment or collective terms can provide additional support. These Labour Act leave provisions exclude statutory outworkers, certain family members living in the employer’s home and working exclusively for them, and shop assistants governed by separate legislation.
StatutoryCountrywideSocial Security sickness allowance
+−
Social Security sickness allowance
Social Security pays qualifying insured members unable to work because of certified illness for up to 234 days: 80% of average weekly insurable earnings for the first 156 days and 60% for the remaining 78 days. At least 50 paid contributions and five paid contributions in the preceding thirteen weeks are required, alongside insured employment when illness starts. Submit the certified claim within fourteen days of the first day of illness. The scheme’s guidance describes cover for insured members under 65; employment status and the applicable age rule must be satisfied when illness begins.

StatutoryCountrywideLump-sum maternity grant
+−
Lump-sum maternity grant
Social Security provides a BZD 300 maternity grant per child following childbirth. It can be claimed by an insured woman or by an insured man whose wife or common-law spouse does not qualify. The claimant needs 50 paid contributions, including 25 in the fifty weeks before childbirth. A male claimant submits the birth evidence and claim within three months after childbirth. This cash grant is separate from maternity leave and the weekly maternity allowance. Social Security also limits receipt to one grant in a calendar year; multiple-birth cases require the fund’s application of its per-child rule.

StatutoryCountrywideMaternity leave and full-pay protection
+−
Maternity leave and full-pay protection
Eligible birth mothers receive fourteen weeks of maternity leave on full pay after at least 150 days with the same employer in the twelve months before childbirth. Up to seven weeks may precede the expected birth and the balance follows it; two weeks before and seven weeks after are compulsory. Employees below the service threshold receive maternity leave without employer pay. Apply at least ten weeks before the expected birth with a medical certificate. Where Social Security maternity allowance applies, the employer pays the difference to the full statutory amount. The employer is not required by this maternity provision to pay pregnancy or childbirth medical expenses. Statutory payments cover Sundays and public holidays and are made in two instalments: the pre-birth period within seven days after childbirth and the post-birth period within seven days after that period ends.
StatutoryCountrywideSocial Security maternity allowance
+−
Social Security maternity allowance
Social Security maternity allowance replaces 80% of average weekly insurable earnings over the preceding 39 weeks for up to fourteen weeks. The insured woman needs 50 paid contributions and, in the relevant 39-week qualification period, at least 25 paid or credited contributions including twenty paid. Claims cover the periods before and after childbirth, with medical confirmation of expected and actual birth. Employee full-pay maternity rights may require an employer top-up; self-employed eligibility follows the separate self-employed programme.
